At what pace do smartphones go down in price?
The iPhone does not go down in price until its subsequent generation is announced, and the rest of the manufacturers are making gradual decreases.
Up to here the topic. In what percentage do the prices of these rest of manufacturers fall? Who makes greater discounts to their phones when they have spent a few months of the launch? Are these discounts getting bigger or smaller? To find out we have collected some 1,800 smartphone prices in Amazon Spain during the last four years, thanks to CamelCamelCamel , Keepa and Archive.org .
These prices are from phones of several manufacturers (chosen with the help of Xataka Móvil’s colleagues ) during their first twenty-four months in the market -some were previously discontinued-, discarding some focused on the input range , as well as manufacturers that do not be global. We point out in particular to brands like Xiaomi, that for not having official distribution until just a few weeks ago we had to leave out on this occasion. Maybe in another four years we can redo this article by including it. We start with the South Koreans.
Samsung
Samsung phones are devalued less and less. The prices of S4 and S5 fell to 65% two years after its commercialization, figures that have not been repeated with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, nor with the S6 Edge + , all of them having already completed two years in the market.
From the Note we have scarce data: 5 did not arrive in Spain, 7 did not speak better and 8 did not have a quarter. The 6 never existed. Even so, both 3 and 4 resisted their prices better than “S” phones. If the Note 8 maintains this trend (and for now, it does), we can assume that, in general, the price of the Note fall more slowly than that of the Galaxy S.
And a final note: the “plus” or “Edge” models, which arrive with a younger brother, also go down less in price . It happened with the S6, the S7 and it is happening with the S8. Is it something from Samsung, or does it happen to more manufacturers? Lets go see it.
lg
LG is one of the manufacturers that earlier applies aggressive discounts to their mobiles . Although in the long term the percentages are not very different from those of competing brands, it is true that in the first months there are more distant prices than the original ones.
Specific mention for the LG Flex , a terminal of 2014 that made noise for its curved screen but not for its sales. Proof of this is that he only had a successor with similar luck and we never heard from LG’s curved smartphones again. This lack of interest is reflected in its price: no other smartphone of the collected in this article fell so much in price at two years: almost 70% .
HUAWEI
With much noise but also many nuts, Huawei has made a big step in the global mobile industry and especially Spanish, where at some point have moved to move Samsung from the top position in sales. In a country with a minimum wage much lower than that of European neighbors and a rate of unemployment that does not explain the tranquility in the streets, the price is a key factor. Huawei not only usually has lower starting prices than its rivals, but also discounts slightly higher in the first months in the shop windows . Less than LG, but more than the rest.
However, their prices are, in general, increasingly stable, within the lowered logic. While in the times of P6, P7 and P8 the discounts in the first months were strong, between 20% and 30%, since the P9 moves between 5% and 20%.
Mention for the P10 Lite , which bypasses this rule and cut its price by 25% shortly after leaving. The low / medium range market tightens strongly.
